Curriculum

Our curriculum Statement of Intent

Our aim is to provide our children with an engaging, exciting and empowering curriculum that equips them to develop their social, emotional and academic abilities for today and the future.

Curriculum design- implementation

Our Curriculum builds upon the children’s prior learning, provides first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.

Our curriculum model uses a thematic approach. We see learning as an ascending spiral with sufficient repetition to ensure that learning becomes embedded and secure.  We know that children learn best when they are supported to make connections between the different areas of their learning building on prior knowledge. This approach makes the subjects more relevant and interesting for our pupils who have little experience of the world outside their immediate location.

Heathfields Infant and Wilnecote Junior Academy underpins learning with the PRIDE

  • Perseverance to keep going when others might quit.
  • Respect everyone, so that we can get along and feel valued.
  • Inquisitive; have a continuous thirst for knowledge.
  • Determination to succeed.
  • Enthusiastic about learning and life.

We include valuable first-hand experiences to enrich the curriculum. We aim to motivate and inspire our learners to prepare them for the world they live in.

We recognise the importance of making links between home and school and encourage parental involvement with the learning of homework. Half Termly homework activities are set to encourage the development of basic skills, improve vocabulary and knowledge.

Our English curriculum is delivered through the use of a quality text to ensure high expectations are in place, it drives the objectives that need to be taught alongside the promotion of reading for pleasure and enjoyment. Children have the opportunity to read or listen to stories daily.

A daily maths lesson is timetabled using Numicon and encourages the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract methods; this promotes the skills of reasoning, discovery and mastery of learning.

Topic themes are used to deliver cross curricular knowledge and skills. Religious Education and PSHCE are highly valued at Heathfields and Wilnecote as we recognise the importance of developing the moral and social skills of our children with particular regard to their emotional health and wellbeing.

Impact (the results and wider outcomes)

Through the curriculum we strive to ensure that our children’s progress in core and foundation subjects is in line with or exceeding their potential when we consider the varied starting points of our children. We measure this carefully using a range of materials, but always considering age related expectations. We intend that the impact is that children will be academically and physically prepared for life in their next school stage, in Modern Britain and the wider world.

We want our learners to become confident, rounded characters with a clear understanding of complex values like equality, friendship, trust and many others. From this they will develop a character that prepares them for living in the community demonstrating tolerance and equality. We measure this not just by the work our children produce, but in the behaviours we see each and every day in all learners on the playground, in corridors, classrooms and in the many roles we give them.

Our learners will be motivated by a strong personal sense of morality. They will make decisions for the right reasons and in the best interests of their community. They will be able to decide what is right and what is wrong, and will be resilient to the influence of others.

PSHE Education

PSHE Education is a planned programme of learning though which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives - now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
